CHALLENGE /

8 independent typical villas of 680 m² each occupy a 4,860 m² lot in the northern area of Jeddah. The rectangular site, edged by a neighboring lot on the western side and three roads on the others, is divided into 8 equal parcels in relation to the setback limits. Two main constraints influenced the introverted design approach adopted throughout the project, those being the tightness of the resulting parcels and the relatively short setback limits on the one hand, and the lack of any scenery views onto which the spaces could open on the other.

CONCEPT /

A wood-cladded volume housing the bedroom suites on the first floor level rests firmly on a rough unfinished stone base. External large steps are carved into the stone to link the ground floor level with the first and to introduce a courtyard-like terraced garden onto which the spaces open up. The resulting negative space between the wooden volume and the stepped stone base is glazed to house the main dining and reception areas, bordered by a 3-meters wide lap pool.
